These days, we are open to talking about depression. In addition to discussing different causes of it, we must acknowledge that being in a toxic relationship or in a not-so-ideal dating situation can be one of those causes. Toxicity, emotional or physical abuse, or even just being in a relationship with unreciprocated will do the trick in making you depressed. But, how do you know exactly?

1. You feel dominated by your partner.

Does your partner control you all of the time? Does he or she try to dictate what you should do or how you should feel? These are pretty clear signs that he or she wants to dominate you. Most likely, if you do not do what he or she wants, your partner withdraws love and affection from the relationship.

2. Your partner’s criticism is making you depressed.

Hurtful words can be as heavy is being hurt physically, if not heavier. Wounds heal, but the emotional ones that we receive will be engrained in our head and our soul for a very very long time. We may even end up believing what our partner said which is very detrimental to how valuable wee ourselves.

3. “It’s my way or the highway.”

You, absolutely, have no say in the relationship. You feel like you have no power because your opinion is not even appreciated or heard. It’s difficult to be in this position because you will, most likely, feel diminished and worthless.

If you spot all of these red flags, do not ignore them. It may be hard for you to see right now, but, chances are, your relationship is not good for your overall well-being.
