We Choose Our Romantic Partners According To This

With more and more people turning to online dating in the hopes of finding true love, we feel more in control of how we choose our romantic partners these days. Unlike dating ‘in the real world’, we can have a wealth of information available to us before we even exchange one word with a possible partner, which helps us eliminate some people and choose to go for those we consider more compatible. What is the one thing we look for consistently, though?

A serious attribute we look for in romantic partners is an education level similar to ours.
It may surprise some, but an education level similar to ours is one thing we look for in romantic partners.

Education Level Matters When Choosing Romantic Partners

According to a study carried out by Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Australia and published on Science Alert, the rise of cyber dating has brought great changes to the way we choose our partners. This can be understood easily considering the fact that more chance factors (such as geographical position) that limited our choices have been eliminated by the internet. This, in turn, has made us pickier.

The study, which was conducted over a 4-month period on a sample of more than 41,000 dating site users between 18 and 80 years old, found that online daters tend to select partners with an equal education level to theirs.

How Online Dating Has Changed Things

Researcher Stephen Whyte attributes this choice to the idea that we usually look for romantic partners that are similar to us, believing this compatibility to help us form better and stronger relationships. There is no doubt that online dating has opened new paths towards this, as online dating profiles give us quite a detailed idea of what prospective partners are like.

According to the behavioral economist, “Cyber dating permits multiple partner choices in real time, which allows for a significantly greater available choice of potential mates. This increased pool means greater opportunity for selection of partners with lower, similar or even higher levels of certain characteristics. This includes education, which is commonly used in human mating behavior as a proxy for resources and future provision, as it can represent economic advantages.”

The Exception

It is worth noting, however, that education level becomes less of a factor as ages increase. More specifically, older women have been found to care less about finding a romantic partner with the same or higher education as them. The same goes for younger males too, as they also seem to care less about the education level of their partner and pay more attention to other attributes.

Whether it is to guarantee a good and stable income, for reasons of social status or because we simply feel that we will be able to find more common ground with someone who has received a similar education to us, it seems that we value education and put it into the equation when it comes to choosing romantic partners.
